The King and I Auditions

Auditions for the minimally-staged version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” will be
Saturday, January 12th, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Sunday, January 13th, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 123 East Market Street, Iowa City, Iowa. Those who audition are asked to prepare a one- to two-minute unaccompanied song that demonstrates their singing strengths. All will be asked to sing “My Country ‘tis of Thee” in their preferred vocal range. A variety of preselected readings will be used to hear speaking voices. This show includes several non-singing roles, in addition to the usual singing roles. Please bring conflicts for January 16th to March 2nd. This show will be performed at the Englert Civic Theater on March 1st and 2nd.



      : vocal range B below middle C to D (fourth line), mid 20s to early 50s


      : unchanged voice, vocal range G below middle C to B (third line), ages 8 to 12


      : vocal range middle C to high A-sharp, youthful


      : mature male voice, vocal range C (2nd space) to E above middle C, 50s or older

Lun Tha

      : vocal range C (2nd space) to G above middle C, youthful to mid 20s

Prince Chulalongkorn

      : unchanged voice, vocal range G below middle C to A (2nd space), ages 8 to 13

Lady Thiang

      : vocal range middle C to G above the clef, mature voice, 40s or older


      : octave range of D, some higher notes available, if interested, all ages


      : vocal range middle C to E (top space), ages 3 to 14, limited to 21 children of both genders


      : same range as children, with a few higher notes available, if you want, all ages

Non-singing roles

      : Captain Orton, Sir Edward Ramsay (regal figure) and the Kralahome


      (imposing figure)


    : non-singing females of imposing stature (4 to 6), any ages

The Royal Family Auditions

The Royal Family by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber is a thinly-veiled portrait of the legendary Barrymores, another renowned “Royal Family of Broadway.” This is a comedy with great style and panache and many wonderful roles.

Auditions are January 5, 2013 from 2:30-5:00 PM, and Monday January 7, 2013 from 6:30-9:00 PM at the Iowa City Public Library, Room A. A prepared piece is welcome but not necessary.

There are roles for 11 men and 6 women.
