Laughter on the 23rd Floor is a 1993 play by Neil Simon. It focuses on the star and writers of a TV comedy-variety show in the 1950s, inspired by Simon’s own early career experience as a junior writer for Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s

Max Prince (Lead): Male, 35-60, Bigger-than-life comic actor who is the mega-star of a hugely popular television variety show “The Max Prince Show,” based on Sid Caesar and “Your Show of Shows;” cannot help but dominate a room entirely.

Lucas Brickman (Lead): Male, 20-35, The freshman writer; sensible and sincere. Our story guide.

Milt Fields: Male, 30-45, The flamboyant “gag” man; a joke a minute wholesaler who deals in fast paced patter.

Val Slotsky: Male, 30-45, A senior member of the staff; the most politically aware of all the writers; a Russian immigrant, he should still carry a strong accent.

Brian Doyle: Male, 30-45, Irish-American, with a biting sense of humor and bitter outlook on life, smokes, drinks, and coughs a lot.

Kenny Franks: Male, 25-35, Considered the “boy genius” of the group but also the most sophisticated of the writers.

Ira Stone: Male, 35-45, A hypochondriac, comes in late every day with a new ailment.

Carol Wyman: Female, 28-40, The only female staff writer. Strong. Independent. Fiery.

Helen: Female, 20-30, Max’s secretary, attractive in a quirky way and completely out of her element amongst the writers.

– No scheduled time slots, walk-ins only.
– Your picture will be taken to provide visual reference to the audition form. Headshots are not required, but will be accepted.
– Please prepare to list your previous experiences. Resumes are not required, but will be accepted.
– Please bring an exhaustive schedule of conflicts for the rehearsal process.
– Auditions will take 10 minutes or less, so please give yourself enough time to complete paperwork prior to auditioning; 15 minutes prior or more.
– Please prepare 16-32 measures of a show tune to sing; an accompanist will be provided, but acapella is also acceptable.
– You will be asked to read a scene from the script; sides will be provided at the door for you to prepare with.
– Director/Music Director may ask you to read or sing additional material without preparation.
– Callbacks will be announced online by 11:00am on Wednesday, July 3 and will be held that evening.

– First read-through will be held on Sunday, July 29 from 1:00-4:00; will include a music rehearsal.
– Rehearsals will be Sundays 1:00p-4:00p and Mondays-Thursdays from 7:00p-10:00p. You may not be called for the entire time. Great effort will be made to only call you when you will be used.
– All cast members are required to participate in all scheduled set-work days.
– Tech will be Sunday, September 9 from 10:00a-5:00p, with a lunch break.

A multiple Tony Award-winning theatrical tour-de-force, Assassins combines Sondheim’s signature blend of intelligently stunning lyrics and beautiful music with a panoramic story of our nation’s culture of celebrity and the violent means some will use to obtain it, embodied by America’s four successful and five would-be presidential assassins. Bold, original, disturbing and alarmingly funny, Assassins is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written.

Assassins lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a one-act historical “revusical” that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, writers, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish roller coaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream.

Assassins requires skilled singers who are also versatile actors.

Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald (1939-1963). Male, 20-30. Vocal range: G4 (top) to C3 (bottom). The Balladeer is a folk singer and the narrator of the show; the voice of America. He is also revealed in the final scenes to be Lee Harvey Oswald who assassinated President John F. Kennedy from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, TX on November 22, 1963. A suicidal, dejected shipping clerk.

John Wilkes Booth (1838-1865). Male, 25-35. Vocal range: G4 (top) to F2 (bottom). Assassinated President Abraham Lincoln during a performance at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. on April 14, 1865. Foreman and inspirational celebrity to the other assassins.

Charles Guiteau (1841-1882). Male, 35-45. Vocal range: Ab4 (top) to A2 (bottom). Assassinated President James Garfield in the waiting room of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station, Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881. Dashing but mad.

Leon Czologosz (1873-1901). Male, 25-30. Vocal range: G4 (top) to G#2 (bottom). Assassinated President William McKinley at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. on September 6, 1901. A young poverty-worn radical.

Giuseppe Zangara (1900-1933). Male, 30-35. Vocal range: A4 (top) to B2 (bottom). Attempted to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt as he greeted well-wishers in Bayfront Park, Miami, FL on February 15, 1933. An angry, heavily-accented immigrant.

Samuel Byck (1930-1974). Male, 40-45. Vocal range: G4 (top) to D3 (bottom). Attempted to assassinate President Richard Nixon by hijacking a commercial jetliner. Hysterically irate schlep in a Santa Claus suit.

Lynette “squeaky” Fromme (1948- ). Female, 25-30. Vocal range G5 (top) to A3 (bottom). Attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford at the Capitol Park in Sacramento, CA on September 5, 1975. A pixie hippie in love with Charles Manson.

Sara Jane Moore (1930- ). Female, 40-45. Vocal range: Eb5 (top) to F3 (bottom). Attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, CA, on September 22, 1975. A frazzled housewife with little sense.

John Hinckley (1955- ). Male, 25-30. Vocal range: G4 (top) to A2 (bottom). Attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan as he left the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. on March 30, 1981. A love-obsessed and depressed college student.

The Proprietor. Male, 30-50. Vocal range: F4 (top) to Gb2 (bottom). A mysterious man who runs the shooting gallery at a carnival. He is a dark and manipulative presence throughout the show.

Ensemble. 2-3 Male, 2-3 Female, 1 Male child. Bystanders; Tourists; Reporters; Photographers, the ensemble plays many different roles throughout the musical and are featured in 2-3 songs that feature the ensemble. In addition to the various roles, the below three roles will be cast from the members of the ensemble.

Emma Goldman (1869-1940). Female, 30-40. Turn-of-the-century Anarchist agitator and feminist. Terse and stubborn. An inspiration to Czolgosz.

David Herold (1842-1865). Male, 20-25. One of John Wilkes Booth’s confederates. Aided Booth in his attempted escape.

Billy. Male, 8-10. Sara Jane Moore’s whiny son.

NOTE TO PARENTS: This musical contains adult themes & language. Additionally, guns are used heavily in the show and the character of Billy has a gun pointed at him in one scene. The director will work closely with the child and their parents to create a healthy, educational, and fun environment for the child. Parents will be expected to attend rehearsals.
